Minnesota SAAB Club Newsletter
March, 2005

Hello, Gang!  I hope everybody is alive and well, and cranking away on those winter projects (not much time left)!  In this month's newsletter, you'll find answers to your burning SAAB related questions like, "Will SAAB ever come back with a hatchback?", or, "When will SAAB come up with a new engine?", or, "Is GM going to shut down SAAB, or maybe they'll just sell 'em to the Chinese??"  Read on and learn more. . . .

Andrews of Princeton and Annette Adams of Meyer Garage would like to thank all of you who showed up to the car wash and 9-2X test drive last Saturday!  Everyone had a great time swapping stories, picking up deals on SAAB goodies, test driving new SAABs, and chowing down free breakfast and free lunch (Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch?).  Over 40 of us got our SAABs washed and vacuumed for free!

For this month's meeting, I am happy to announce that Jim Miller, the owner of "Twin City Tire and Auto Service", will be giving a presentation all about tires, the industry, and how it all affects us.  Jim will also have some examples along for the presentation, and will be happy to answer any questions we may have afterwards.  Jim has run a successful, quality operation for over 25 years, and has two convenient locations; one in Bloomington,  and one across from Eden Prairie Center.  In addition to tires, they offer full service automotive repair, and have competitive fleet service pricing.  Welcome back, Jim!

Meyer Garage officially has a second new SAAB dealership!  Yes, they finished construction on their new Iowa City location last summer, but this new location is now a fully fledged new SAAB dealership where they can perform any warranty work you may need, or you can purchase any new SAAB there too.  Additionally, Meyer Garage was kind enough to drop off a pile of new 2005 SAAB calendars for the gang at the carwash last Saturday!  There may not be quite enough for everybody, so get there early and snag one while you can!  And yes, they are just as nice (if not nicer) than the ones they've had in the past.  Check out their latest inventory as Iowa's oldest SAAB dealership at www.meyersaab.com.

We have SAAB Club stickers available!  The Minnesota SAAB Club window stickers are static-cling so that you will never have to worry about scraping off that hardened film from your window.  The static stickers are similar to the logo here on the newsletter, and are about 3X5 inches in size.  The major difference is that the fire-breathing-chicken is now in red.  Stickers sell for $5 each, or 3 for $10.  Additionally, if you are a current dues paying member of the Minnesota SAAB Club, you get a window sticker for FREE (Membership has its privileges)!  Also, we are not descriminatory.  If you belong to another local or national club, or are simply a lone enthusiast, you too can still get one.  Just contact me to place your order today!

It's membership time again!  Have you popped in on an occassional monthly club meeting?  Have you been helped out with your "SAAB story" from one of the local SAAB buddies?  Have you enjoyed the camaraderie at one of the meetings or one of the area events?  If you have felt the desire to give back a little, now you can!  Make a once a year contribution of $25 to "The Minnesota SAAB Club" , and feel good about yourself knowing that you are supporting an organization devoted to helping out others, keeping the environment clean, keeping the SAAB brand alive, drinking beer. . . . , wait, you get the picture!  You can advertise cars and goods for sale in the newsletter and on the club website (www.mnsaabclub.org) , and you will also receive one of the cool new static club stickers we have (a $5 value!)  Receive various discounts from your favorite regional SAAB facility, and so much more.  Renew or become a new member today!

The race car is coming!  The Minnesota SAAB Club rally car will be at this month's meeting, driven by Max Levine, and will be available for perusal starting around 6:30.  Max will also bring a couple boxes of rally car goodies for show and tell and discussion.  Member Bruce Gaarder sent along a few great articles regarding the oil industry, fuel efficient cars, and viable alternative fuels that few have ever heard.  They were a little too long for the newsletter, and maybe not quite SAAB specific enough, but they are very informative and I will provide several stapled copies for everyone to take home and read.  Thanks, Bruce!  Ideas and contributions for programs and newsletter content are always welcome.  Keep it coming!

FOR RELEASE: 2005-02-21

9-7X, Saab's First SUV, Stars In "ten" Fashion Show

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - The all-new Saab 9-7X takes to the runway this week as part of the fourth annual "ten" fashion show. The 9-7X joins several other GM products at what has become a must-attend event for Hollywood's entertainment industry luminaries.

The charity-driven event will showcase top celebrities wearing the latest fashions paired with stylish cars and trucks. The event will highlight current concept cars and production vehicles as they are revealed to an audience of Hollywood's elite in a runway show on February 22 on the corner of Hollywood and Vine.

Oscar Nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno and Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee, Jamie Foxx, will model in the show. Combining fashion, automotive design, and top entertainment, the charity-driven event will also include celebrities, sports figures and rock stars including four-time NASCAR champion, Jeff Gordon, Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer, Anthony Kiedis, Emmy nominee Amber Tamblyn, Hilary and Haylie Duff and a performance by Grammy winner Kanye West.

The 9-7X goes on sale in the United States this spring with very attractive pricing. Saab's first-ever SUV will come in two models: the Linear, priced at $38,990.00 and the Arc, priced at $40,990.00. Both MSRPs include a $720.00 destination charge.

The 9-7X SUV is just one part of the most aggressive product development offensive in Saab's 57-year history. It joins the 9-3 Sport Sedan and Convertible, the 9-5 Sedan and SportWagon and the all-wheel drive 9-2X, as well as the upcoming all-new Saab 9-3 SportCombi and the 250-hp 2.8V6 Turbo, which will become available in all 9-3 Aero models later this year.

The 9-7X Linear features standard all-wheel drive, leather-appointed heated front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, side-curtain airbags, integrated roof rails, OnStar, XM Satellite Radio, 6-CD Bose audio system and a choice between a moonroof or a rear-DVD entertainment system.

It is powered by an in-line 6-cylinder engine that makes 275 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. The 9-7X Arc adds xenon headlamps, adjustable pedals, headlamp washers and a 300-hp/330 lb.-ft. V8.

The 9-7X continues Saab's tradition of a cockpit-inspired instrument panel with its signature sliding-plate vents, in-dash cupholder and center console-mounted ignition. The Saab 9-7X can be ordered in Obsidian Black, Titanium Silver and Ocean Blue.

Saab is making the 9-7X SUV even more attractive with a limited special offer. By registering before March 31, 2005, customers who purchase or lease a 2005 9-7X will get three years of free OnStar "Safe & Sound" and XM Satellite Radio service, a $700.00 value. In addition, current Saab drivers whose leases expire in February, March or April will qualify for a lease extension of up to six months to enable them to take delivery of a new 2005 9-7X.

Saab will target potential customers with a direct mail campaign by the end of February 2005. This mailing will direct prospects to the Saab 9-7X website, www.saab97Xsuv.com. Once customers have registered at this website, they will automatically receive the additional free services once they take delivery of their 2005 9-7X. Interested customers can go directly to the website even if they did not receive the mailing from Saab.

"The 9-7X joins the Saab lineup at the right time because the demand for premium midsize SUVs is strong," said Debra Kelly-Ennis, President and COO of Saab USA. "About forty percent of current Saab owners already have an SUV of another make in their garage, while nearly 30 percent of Saab owners have left the brand for an SUV in the past. With the 9-7X, Saab will be able to take advantage of the continued growth in this segment."

On top of that, the Saab 9-7X SUV represents outstanding value for money, especially when compared with the Volvo XC90. Not only has the 9-7X more headroom, legroom, towing capability and engine torque, it is also priced at over $8,000.00 less than a comparably equipped XC90 V8. Saab Automobile AB and Saab Cars USA, Inc. are subsidiary companies of General Motors Corp. Saab Cars USA is the importer of Saab 9-2X, 9-3 and 9-5 automobiles for Saab Automobile AB, Sweden. Saab GLOBAL V-6 FAMILY EXPANDS WITH NEW 2.8L TURBOCHARGED ENGINE FOR SAAB
February 14, 2005 / Detroit, Mich.

General Motors expands the family of advanced global V-6 engines with the sophisticated 2.8L V-6 Turbo - a transverse-mounted compact and lightweight powerhouse that delivers the performance of a larger-displacement engine.

The 2.8L V-6 Turbo debuts in the all-new Saab 9-3 SportCombi, Sedan and Convertible, continuing the brand's heritage of turbo power established in 1977. It is the most sophisticated turbocharged engine ever offered in a Saab vehicle, delivering excellent responsiveness through low-speed torque and high-rpm power as well as exceptional refinement.

Technology such as a dual-scroll turbocharger and variable intake valve timing helps the 2.8L V-6 Turbo achieve 250 horsepower (184 kw) and 258 lb.-ft. of torque (350 Nm) in the 9-3.

"The 2.8L V-6 Turbo has a strong, linear feel that gives the impression of a larger-displacement engine," said Tim Cyrus, global V-6 chief engineer. "The feeling of power is tremendous, but so is the smoothness and refinement built into the engine."

Developed in conjunction with other engines in the global V-6 family, turbocharging was designed into the architecture's structural parameters. The powertrain engineers' experience with turbocharging at Saab was integral in refining the engines' performance, with the 2.8L V-6 Turbo delivering maximum torque by 2,000 rpm and maintaining it through 4,500 rpm. Ninety percent of peak torque is available from just 1,500 rpm. This broad performance spectrum results in an engine that effectively offers two torque curves: a linear curve that delivers exceptional low- and mid-range torque, and higher-rpm power that benefits from the pressure of the turbocharger.

"It's almost like having two engines on tap," said Cyrus. "At low speeds, the inherent torque of the V-6 pulls strongly, but it has the power of a larger-displacement engine when the full power of the turbo system is called up."

Inside the engine

All engines in the global V-6 family share traits that include a lightweight aluminum cylinder block with iron cylinder sleeves, an aluminum structural oil pan and aluminum cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder. The 2.8L V-6 Turbo builds on those strengths with components and technology developed specifically for the turbo system, including:

The turbo system features a unique, twin-scroll turbocharger. It has an integral bypass valve and is fed by two exhaust ducts - one from each cylinder bank. Separating the exhaust gas pulses with two compressor zones improves gas flow and reduces energy loss. The turbo system's charge cooler promotes performance by reducing the temperature of inlet air.

Additionally, the 2.8L V-6 Turbo employs a conventional, single-stage intake manifold and variable valve timing on the intake camshaft - the variable valve timing helps optimize performance and emissions control. Also, a variable fuel pressure system helps ensure smooth idle and driving characteristics. Valve timing and fuel pressure are managed by the engine's powerful controller, a 32-bit micro-hybrid system which is calibrated specifically for the turbocharged application.

The sophisticated controller operates under a torque-based engine management strategy designed to deliver smooth performance in all driving conditions. The system works with the vehicle's transmission to modulate torque, providing stirring performance and excellent engine response. The system also can limit torque in low-traction conditions, helping provide confident, sure-footed driving.Expands Line to Rev Up Sales in U.S.

All-New Saab 9-3 SportCombi:
Power and Versatility, Saab Style
February 14, 2005 / Detroit, Mich. and Trollhättan, Sweden

The all-new Saab 9-3 SportCombi, announced today, takes Saab into the premium, mid-size wagon segment for the first time by combining distinctive design, sporty driving dynamics and five-door functionality

Its strong, compact proportions are a bold reaffirmation of a Saab tradition of designing cars that are sporty in character and versatile in use. The cohesive five-door styling and a solid, muscular stance give the 9-3 SportCombi a clear, stand-out identity within the Saab 9-3 range.

Making its public debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show and due to go on sale in Europe and the United States from the fourth quarter of 2005, the 9-3 SportCombi will appeal to customers who require the versatility of a wagon, including smart load-carrying features and a generously proportioned cargo area, without compromising their desire for driving satisfaction.

The SportCombi rounds out Saab's best selling range of cars, the 9-3. 27,139 Saabs 9-3 were sold in 2004 in the United States, of which over 6,100 were convertibles. The newest 9-3 proudly carries on the Saab tradition of hatchback models that began in 1959 with the Saab 95. In 1973, Saab pioneered another landmark design with the 99 CombiCoupe. Of the more than 500,000 Saabs on the road in the United States today, nearly 50 percent are hatchbacks.

Building on Saab's reputation for progressive design and high fun-to-drive quotient, the 9-3 SportCombi is poised to open up major new sales opportunities for the brand.

In the United States, the new 9-3 SportCombi range will start with a well-equipped 210 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder. The high performance Aero model features an all-new turbocharged V6 that makes 250- hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine will also be available in the 2006 9-3 Aero Sport Sedan and 9-3 Aero Convertible.

Debra Kelly-Ennis, president and COO of Saab USA, said, "The turbo V6 in the 9-3 Aero SportCombi and other 9-3 Aero models will give drivers more of what they expect in the Saab driving experience - ready torque throughout the rev range, high rpm power, smoothness and refinement."

Progressive design

With a wedge-like profile and Saab 'signature' styling cues, the close-coupled proportions of the 9-3 SportCombi include a surprisingly spacious cargo area (volume with the cargo cover in place and the rear seat up and folded is, respectively, 14.8 cu.ft. and 44.95 cu. ft. and useful load-carrying features.

  • Sporty, distinct alternative to conventional wagon proportions. Saab traditional 'hockey stick' belt-line and 'fastback' rear quarter styling with steeply raked taillight lenses and LED bulbs.
  • TwinFloor stowage facility. By pulling the chrome, aircraft-shaped handle, the main cargo area floor lifts to divide the space into two separate sections and to reveal additional storage in the recessed sub-floor. The optional sub-woofer is located in the spare wheel storage well.
  • The 9-3 SportCombi has zero lift levels at both axles (0.00 Clf and 0.00 Clr). The car has an excellent drag coefficient of 0.33 and impressive high speed stability. The integrated rear roof spoiler is standard.
Strong performance

The powertrain line-up is led by the launch of a sophisticated new 2.8V6 Turbo engine. The SportCombi inherits the outstanding chassis dynamics of the Sport Sedan, with a 'fun-to-drive' appeal that concedes nothing to its functionality as a versatile, five-door car.

  • New aluminum 2.8V6 Turbo. 250 bhp/184 kW, exclusive to top-of-the-line Aero, with 24-valves, DOHC, variable intake valve timing and a twin-scroll turbocharger.
  • The unique Saab ReAxs rear wheel steer characteristic from the Sport Sedan gives enhanced driver feedback and control for excellent handling and stability.
  • The rigid five-door body structure provides a solid foundation for the car's sporty handling, refinement and outstanding safety characteristics. Torsional rigidity (21,000 Nm/degree) only marginally less than that of the Sport Sedan, despite the open five-door body format.
  • New generation Saab-tuned ESP and ESP Plus. All 2.8V6 Turbo variants include ESP Plus, with Hill Start Assist for manual gearboxes to prevent roll back.
"Although the SportCombi is a natural extension of the 9-3 range, it has a fresh character all of its own. In the tradition of the Saab brand, it is not simply a 'me too' type of product," says Peter Augustsson, Saab Automobile President and CEO.

"Its progressive design and dynamic talents are intended to resolve any conflict between the rationality of need and the passion of desire. Customers will see it as a car that meets the demands of their lifestyle while still satisfying their desire for a sporty, fun-to-drive experience."

DEARBORN, Mich. — Coming off a year when its U.S. sales fell 20 percent, General Motors Corp.'s Saab brand is counting on an expanded product line, major dealership renovations and an aggressive new advertising campaign to take it from quirky also-ran to a competitive global brand.

The Swedish car maker will introduce a seven-seat crossover vehicle, and also plans to take full advantage of its relationship with the world's biggest car company by sharing more vehicle platforms and assembly plants, said Debra Kelly-Ennis, president and chief operating officer of Saab Cars U.S.A.
"This opportunity presents the best asset that we have for meeting our growth imperative," Kelly-Ennis said at the Automotive News World Congress.  She is hoping Saab will sell 40,000 vehicles in the United States this year, compared with slightly more than 38,000 in 2004.  The latest sales figures represent a 20.4 percent drop from 2003, according to Autodata Corp.

Long known for its solid quality, quirky but beloved design and its limited product line, Saab can no longer live in such an isolated bubble.  The entry luxury category has become one of the hottest product segments, with competitors such as Volvo, Audi and Acura offering more choices at similar prices.
"We are literally the David in an industry of Goliaths," Kelly-Ennis said.

GM purchased a 50 percent stake in Saab in 1990, forming Saab Automobile AB, and took full control in 2000.  Under GM, Saab has remained a respected brand. But it also remains unprofitable.  Kelly-Ennis would not predict if or when Saab would start paying off for the automaker, but said the right things are being done to turn Saab from a drain to a contributor.
"If you're going to succeed and be a positive contributor, you have to be in more segments ... and you have to refresh (the products) more often," she said.  "Now that the ownership is complete, product portfolio and investment has moved to the forefront."

Faced with shrinking profits from its core automotive business, GM is taking a serious look at Saab.
"What we have to do to make it successful is what we're spending our time on," Fritz Henderson, chairman of GM Europe, said in an interview at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. "We're asking ourselves a lot of hard questions of how to get this done."

Kelly-Ennis wants to move from what she called the "base camp," where the brand is today, to the Saab "summit" — a strong global brand with strong sales.  An expansion of Saab's model line is under way and the brand is in the midst of what Kelly-Ennis called the "most aggressive product program in its history."

It began with the 2003 Saab 9-3 sport sedan and convertible and continued last year with Saab's first collaborative vehicle — the 9-2X sport wagon, built on the same basic structure as the Subaru Impreza. Critics have derided the car as a "Saabaru."  This spring, Saab will add its first sport utility vehicle, the 9-7X, which represents another milestone for the Swedish automaker — its first vehicle built in North America.  The 9-7X will be assembled in Moraine, Ohio, at the same factory churning out the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy — all evidence of the closer relationship between the once-independent brand and the Detroit mother ship.

Making its debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March will be a hatchback version of the 9-3 called the SportCombi, along with a 9-3 powered by a 250 horsepower, turbocharged V-6 engine.  More details will be revealed in the fall regarding a seven-passenger crossover vehicle based on the Subaru B9 Tribeca. Saab also has plans to refresh its flagship 9-5 sedan and sport wagon, too.

Using GM and Subaru vehicle platforms to produce new Saab products makes good business sense, says Joseph Barker, a product analyst with Farmington Hills consultants CSM Worldwide. But customers haven't been fooled by the 9-2X's bloodlines with the Subaru Impreza, resulting in sluggish sales. The 9-7X, Barker says, just looks too similar to the TrailBlazer and Envoy.  "Saab's mission is to conquest import buyers," Barket said. "Brand engineering could weaken its lure."

Southfield, Mich., Saab dealer George Glassman said the new products may attract new customers, but concedes he may lose some, too.  "There's no question the shared architectures will alienate Saab purists," Glassman said. "The only danger is if you're going to do that, the brand has to remain distinctive, but I'm enthused about the seven-passenger vehicle."

Kelly-Ennis insists the brand must not only broaden its product line but expand vehicle manufacturing beyond Sweden to offset unfavorable currency exchange rates. This year Saab vehicles are being produced in Sweden, Austria, Japan and the United States.

The brand will launch an aggressive advertising campaign beginning on Valentine's Day that extols its appeal to independent-minded buyers. It will feature catchphrases such as, "For those who consider conformity a serious road hazard," and "Engineered to protect you from the middle of the road."

Most of Saab's 250 U.S. dealers have already upgraded or plan to upgrade their facilities with a more modern design.  Saab dealer Irma Elder believes in the strategy and is optimistic the brand will ultimately survive.  "Saab has got a good product," said Elder, owner of Saab of Troy, the nation's biggest Saab dealership.  "It fell on hard times, it didn't have the array of products other lines had, but now it is getting products and Saab is here to stay."

"Saab is here to stay."

GM review poses threat of closure to Saab

By James Mackintosh in Detroit

Published: January 10 2005

A General Motors review of its Saab subsidiary could lead to the upmarket car brand being axed, if the heavy investment required to revive it is deemed unjustified. GM executives and people familiar with the study said there was only an outside chance that the Swedish marque would be killed off by the review, due to be completed within three months. But even a remote threat of the company being closed is likely to prompt a political storm in Sweden, where the automotive industry is one of the most important employers.

Goran Persson, prime minister, has already visited Zurich, where GM's European headquarters is based, to offer significant investment in the region around Saab's Trollhättan factory if it is given more production. GM added two new models to the Saab line-up last year in what executives said was a "quick and dirty fix" to improve sales. But Rick Wagoner, GM chairman and chief executive, admitted on Sunday that the new 9-2X small Saab, based on a car from Subaru, GM's Japanese affiliate, had not met sales targets after a botched US launch. John Devine, GM's chief financial officer, said in an interview on Monday that the Saab brand "still has attraction."  "It does have a future but how big and what role it plays are what we are looking at right now," he said. One big question, he added, was "how to take the currency risk out of manufacturing."  That comment is likely to increase concerns about the future of the Swedish factory, which has been badly hurt by the strength of the Swedish Krona."

According to GM insiders, the company remains unclear what the Saab brand stands for. The typical customer is an academic - and, says one executive, "the question is, are there enough university professors to make the investments worthwhile?"

Saab has lost money in all but one of the past 10 years and GM has steadily reduced its autonomy over the past 18 months. Manufacturing, engineering and most design decisions are now controlled by GM Europe executives, based in Germany or Switzerland, reducing Saab's local management to controlling branding and marketing. The review coincides with a decision on whether to build GM's new Opel Vectra saloon and the replacement for the Saab 9-3, both due in 2007, at Saab's Trollhättan factory. Trade unions have warned that if production is moved to Opel's Rüsselsheim plant, which has also bid for the work, then Trollhättan is likely to close, although GM denies this. The Saab plant employs 6,000 workers.  Trollhättan was given a boost this week by the news that it will build the small Cadillac aimed at Europe, but the car, based on the existing Saab 9-3, will not sell enough units on its own to justify keeping the factory open.
