SAAB home pageBORN FROM JETS
Minnesota SAAB Club Newsletter
June, 2006

Hello, gang!  I would like to say that the Intermarque Spring Kick-off on May 21st was a blast!  We came in 7th place with 7 SAABs in attendance-including our own club Pro Rally race car.  There were over 100 other terrific European cars in attendance ranging from several neat "un-polished pearls" to a new Aston Martin DB-9.  If you happened to miss the event, or if you don't have your own project out on the road yet this year, there is plenty more motivation for you with upcoming events like Andrews Open House, tours, rallies, parties, club meetings and so much more.  Read on to learn about what's going on in the SAAB world - like increased US sales - and find out which other SAAB was also named a "best safety pick."  Check out the "Born From Jets" national air show tour, and find out why younger drivers prefer purchasing a SAAB over Mercedes and BMW!

Last month we had a really great club meeting in the sky box at Big City Tavern.  There was lots of dialogue, and many nifty stories that were shared - nice job, guys!  For this month's meeting, we will have our old pal Pat Greer come over from Milwaukee to tell all about the new rubber that Nokian and Hankook are putting to the road.  What's that?  You just put away your winter tires?  That's all right, Nokian has some of the awesomest summer tires too!  We will also be discussing the two big Minnesota club events coming up in the next month.  Due to the city cancelling their local festival, Andrews Open House is rescheduled for Saturday, June 8th, and the Minnesota SAAB Club will fill Saturday, June 17th with activities like a make-up breakfast and highway cleanup, SAAB Tour, and picnic!

SAAB Video Website Effort
Ryan Emge, an architect and SAAB enthusiast in Washingtin D.C., has been on a mission to ensure the survival of all the SAAB videos ever made.  Ryan has created a SAAB video site by uploading Saab videos provided by those who have contributed new footage.  If you or anyone you know may have some cool old video clips that may not be on the site yet, please try and get them added to the site!  Ryan is eventually trying to get everything off the first site, and onto a second google site with better bandwidth, however the domain www.saabvideos.com, the page itself and the images will remain.

Ryan would also like to get more of the Saab videos onto DVD too, so that others can enjoy them on their home TVs!  This will require converting the original videos to MPEG-2 video / PCM audio for DVD.  He is eager to find out where SAAB has their archive of all this footage, as he is hopeful that something like that exists.  Many individuals across the country have mailed him their VHS tapes including Bob Sinclair, and Lennart Lonnegren, among others, and he has digitized them using a converter that goes between a new VCR and his computer.

He will safely and quickly return them to you in the same packaging you send them to him in. It has taken quite an effort on his part to help keep this history available for generations to come, so I urge you to visit the site,
www.saabvideos.com, and help contribute if you can!  Thanks for the tremendous effort, Ryan!

Saab 9-2X joins 9-3 Sport Sedan as "Top Safety Pick" in US Safety Report

Only Luxury Car Manufacturer with Two IIHS "Gold Awards"

Detroit, Mich. -- With the 9-2X premium compact joining the 9-3 Sport Sedan, Saab is the first luxury carmaker to receive a pair of 'Top Safety Pick - Gold Award' designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Gold Award is a best-of-the-best distinction that recognizes car designs that provide the best occupant protection in front, side and rear crashes based on Institute testing.

“We commend Saab for making the 9-2X the second Saab vehicle to earn our demanding Top Safety Pick award”, said Adrian Lund, President of the IIHS.

The IIHS frontal impact test is carried out at 40 mph against a deformable fixed barrier, with a 40 percent driver's side offset. In the IIHS side impact test a deformable barrier constructed to resemble a full-size sport utility vehicle, is propelled at 31 mph against the driver's side of the car to measure side impact protection. The rear-end test simulates a 20-mph rear impact into a stationary car, during which the front seat/head restraint performance is assessed.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a non-profit research and communications organization in the United States funded by auto insurers. It investigates the crashworthiness of vehicles. More information at www.IIHS.org

General Motors Corp.'s Saab will double U.S. sales by as early as 2010 as
the European unit moves ahead with its plan to end losses, its U.S. sales
chief said.

Jerome York, an aide to GM investor Kirk Kerkorian, said in January that GM
should sell or close Saab and Hummer and focus on its larger brands, after
GM's $10.6 billion loss last year. York joined the Detroit-based company's
board in February.

“He wants what all of us want, sales and profit growth,'' said Jay
Spenchian, Saab's U.S. general manager, in an interview today in
Southfield, Michigan. “He wants us to put our money where our mouth is and
just try and deliver.''

Saab and Hummer have been GM's fastest-growing brands in the U.S. this
year, helped by new models such as the Saab 9-7X and Hummer H-3
sport-utility vehicles. Sales through April rose 8.1 percent at Saab and
almost tripled at Hummer, as GM's total fell 6.7 percent. New models are
part of GM's plan to stabilize a U.S. market share that has fallen to 24
percent this year from 51 percent in 1962.

“If Saab is profitable or break-even and they can attract buyers you
wouldn't normally get in GM, it's a positive,'' said Southfield-based
AutoPacific auto analyst Jim Hall. “Saab can be made profitable. The
question is, how broad does Saab need to be to get there?''

Saab will double annual U.S. sales to about 80,000 by 2010 or 2011,
Spenchian said. In the next few years, Saab plans to replace the 9-7X with
a smaller SUV model shared with a Cadillac design and introduce new
versions of the 9-5 and 9-3 sedans, he said. The Sweden-based unit is also
studying at least one other undisclosed vehicle, Spenchian said.

Saab Sales and Image Taking Off: Young Buyers Pick It over BMW and Mercedes
--- Auto123.Com

By Alex Law, May 2006

In the normal course of a story like this, I would blow corporate bumph and
middle-aged opinion and sales results about Saab up your skirt until you
couldn't see for blushing.

But you're in luck today, since there's a survey about the used car desires
of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 to tell you about instead, and
it's more compelling than the normal smoke.

In this survey conducted by an extremely reputable firm (CNW), 1.28 percent
of the respondents currently looking for a used car would consider "any
Saab" as a possible purchase. Now, this number won't seem like much until
you consider that the vehicle with the highest rating, the Jeep Wrangler,
only scored 16.92 percent.

What's more telling about the results of this survey is that no BMW or
Mercedes models appealed to enough of these young people (1 percent was the
minimum level needed) to make the list.

If I can twist an old expression just slightly, being picked ahead of those
two German premium brands by young people tends to give Saab a kind of
canary in the cool mine status that's hard to ignore. Believe me when I
tell you that these survey results will give marketing executives at BMW
and Mercedes pause.

The results do not surprise me, however, since BMW and Mercedes customers
have a tendency to be, respectively, pretentious or stodgy, and probably
even parental. If you're a kid who wants to spray a little Eau de Voyage de
Mer on his or her personality in your next automobile, you probably don't
want something that your father the tax accountant or your mother the
successful real estate agent drive.

If this all sounds pretty superficial, well, that's because decisions
between one kind of premium product and another usually are, and they are
forever ephemeral. Many of the folks buying Beemers and Mercs today do so
because their parents bought Caddys and Lincolns, and it's unwise to think
the same kind of brand rejection won't happen with their children.

There's little real fundamental difference between cars of similar size and
equipment that cost this much, so image and impression tend to take on
extra significance. Sure, differences may show on roads where it's legal or
even possible to go 250 kmh, but with the legal and traffic realities of
North America they count for naught.

In the road reality of Canada and the U.S., then, the lineup for the
GM-owned Saab brand is pretty solid. There's the entry-level 9-2X they
borrowed from the Subaru which hasn't been very successful and might be
replaced one day by something from GM's European lineup. It's still an
excellent choice for someone looking for a sporty compact car.

There's also the new Saab 9-7X, which is an American SUV with the kind of
accent the Swedish chef had in The Muppet Show. It's still an excellent SUV
and the Saab-esque touches make it different, and that can appeal to lots
of folks regardless of their age.

The core models for Saab continue to be the 9-3 and recently upgraded 9-5,
which offer turbocharged iterations of the sedans and wagons themes,
offering comfort and performance for more reasonable operating costs than
is traditional in this segment.

But if there was a lodestar for the entire brand it would be the
convertible version of the smaller 9-3 line. There's just something about
the 9-3 droptop that makes it special.

I can tell you from vast experience that it is THE single best car on the
road for touring someplace beautiful and/or cool. Being in a Saab
convertible has raised the enjoyment level for visits to San Francisco, St.
Petersburg, the northern most point of Europe, the Pacific Coast Highway,
New England, and the Riviera several times. It can also do wonders toward
making your home town more appealing.

The Saab 9-3 ragtop works better than competitive models from BMW, Mercedes
and Volvo because it doesn't have the heavy emotional baggage of those
brands, and that helps you chill out and relax, dude, which is the primary
directive of a convertible.

By far the biggest noise for Saab right now can only be heard in Sweden,
where the BioPower version of the 9-5 is at the top of the environmental
cars list, outselling everything on the market, including the Toyota Prius
hybrid by about five to one. GM has plans to extend the use of E85 (85
percent ethanol) models like this around the world, but at present Canada
has only two (2) stations that provide this fuel, so we shouldn't hold our
breath.

As for that futuristic Aero X concept car, we're not likely to see it on
the road any time soon, but we should see elements of its design on future
real-world Saabs.

In general, things are working out fairly well for the folks from
Trollhattan, which, in case you were wondering, translates pretty much
directly into English.

Saab sales are taking off around the world, going up 17 percent in the
first quarter of 2006 versus 2005. In Canada, the increase is even greater
-- 29 percent. And if there's anything to that survey charting the buying
habits of North American youths, future growth levels could be even
greater.

5/18/06-SAAB reports European sales increase of 21.3 percent for first four months
Saab sales continue to accelerate, with all-time volume records achieved in Europe from January to April of 2006,
where a 21.3 percent increase (+ 5,588 cars) produced sales of 31,798 units. Worldwide sales increased to 44,827
cars during the first four months of the year, a 17.3 percent increase against the same period last year. Each of
Saab's top ten markets – accounting for 85 percent of total sales – posted increases, including all-time record
volumes in the U.K., Spain and Belgium. The U.S.A. returned to the number one sales market globally for Saab, at
11,208 units for the first four months of 2006, followed by the U.K. with 9,373 units and Sweden, the brand’s home
market of Saab, where 8,326 cars were sold in the first four months, up 2,176 cars or 38 percent versus the same
period a year ago. In April 2006, Saab sold 10,847 cars globally and 7,146 in Europe, achieving a European market
share of 0.4 percent. The launch of the Saab 9-3 SportCombi range, the introduction of a new top-of-the-line
2.8-liter V6 turbo engine and the outstanding success of the Saab 9-5 BioPower in Sweden, where it is the
top-selling environmentally-friendly ethanol vehicle, continue to contribute to Saab’s strong performance.

Saab "Born From Jets" on Tour at Air Shows Throughout the United States

Saab Born From Jets Tour

Detroit , Mich. – Saab was founded by 16 aircraft engineers and their spirit lives on. Saab Automobile USA took this as the source of inspiration for its comprehensive “Born From Jets” marketing campaign, which started last fall with an impactful series of television ads such as ”Delta Formation” featuring the 9-3, “Transformer” with the 9-7X SUV and recently “Head to Head” in which a new 9-5 races a Saab Gripen jet fighter.

As the next logical step, Saab Automobile USA is taking its Born From Jets tag line on the road, establishing a strong presence at a number of air shows in targeted markets around the Unites States. This weekend on Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, the Saab Born From Jets Tour will be at the Naval Air Station in Forth Worth, Texas.

“Saab’s main challenge here in the United States is that we are not very well known,” said Jay Spenchian, Saab USA general manager. “Once people get exposed to our expanded line of products and our unique aircraft heritage, they typically get excited pretty quickly. Our participation in air shows gives us a terrific opportunity to get exposure to millions of consumers, in a way that only Saab can do.”

For the Born From Jets Tour, Saab purposely created an eye-catching trailer that resembles an aircraft hangar, including an attached control tower. When set up at an air show, this mobile hangar features technical displays and plasma screens that show Saab commercials and other product messages. Product specialists provide information on a wide selection of Saab vehicles on display in front of the trailer.

In addition, the renowned Saab Performance Team from Sweden has been scheduled to perform at select air shows that are on the Born From Jets Tour list for this year. Nicknamed the “Jets On Four Wheels” and featuring a foursome of 9-3 Aero

Turbo V6 Sport Sedans, the Saab Performance Team delivers an impressive demonstration of Saab’s technical capabilities on the ground - drawing crowds wherever it goes.

The Saab Born From Jets Tour schedule for the remainder of this year includes the air shows at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC (May 20-21), Jones Beach Waterfront in New York, NY (May 27-28), Denver, CO (June 24-25), Downtown Waterfront in Chicago, IL (August 19-20) and Fleet Week in San Francisco, CA (October 6-8).

The Forth Worth Air Show this weekend will take place at the Naval Air Station and Joint Reserve Base at Carswell Field. There will be a variety of attractions including a performance by the Blue Angels at around 3:00 pm. The gates are open to the general public between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. This show is expecting 120,000 people per day. The Saab Born From Jets Tour will be on display at this event near the main entrance of the show.

Saab: From Aircraft to Automobiles

Saab's aviation roots go back almost 70 years to 1937, when Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (Swedish Aircraft Company Limited) was founded in the town of Trollhättan, 45 miles/70 km north of Gothenburg, where Saab cars are still built today on the site of the original aircraft factory.

The company supplied military aircraft to the Swedish Air Force and began diversifying into civil aviation in 1944 and the automotive business in 1947, when its first car, the Saab 92, was unveiled (Saab 91 was a light aircraft used for pilot training). The 92's streamlined, teardrop-shaped bodywork was clearly the work of aircraft engineers and radical for a small production car of the time, as was the use of wind tunnel testing during its design.

The adoption of front-wheel drive for sure-footed handling, excellent roadholding and efficient space utilization was also unconventional for the time - more than a decade before the layout was to become popular in the rest of the auto industry.

Another innovative design from Saab's newly-created car division was the Sonett 1, a lightweight sports car for competition use, unveiled exactly 50 years ago this year. Its 'monocoque' chassis was made from aviation-specification aluminum panels, instead of the usual arrangement of steel beams and tubes. Although common in aircraft construction, Saab was using this design six years before it was introduced to Grand Prix racing.

Today, more than 4 million cars and 4,000 aircraft later, Saab is one name and two companies. The car business, Saab Automobile AB, is now wholly owned by General Motors, the world's largest auto maker, and the Saab Group is a global leader in the application of advanced technologies, specializing in aerospace and defense systems.

Over the years, Saab cars have continued to incorporate aircraft-inspired design features, from wrap-around windshields and cockpit-like ergonomics to green instrument illumination and need-to-know information displays.

And the innovative spirit of those early aircraft engineers, including their pioneering attention to safety, continues to be reflected in Saab's unconventional approach to car design.

We are $3500.00 + in debt and need your help to pay these bills. You may be asking yourselves how this could have happened. There are many reasons for this debt not the least of which is people sneaking into Saturday night's dinner and sponsors backing out last minute. So if you know of anyone who did come to dinner (without paying) Saturday night please encourage them to make a donation. Spread the word. We don't care who they are we just want to cover the debt and put the 2005 convention to bed. If you feel like donating that's great too, there are three donation options available. (Saturday's dinner cost us $35+) Most of the for sale items are located with Ashli and I and we'd like to get them out of our 700 square foot house as well. we just reduced the prices on many items recently... So buy now, buy often. With our thanks in advance for your support. http://www.mollyguard.com/event/21919562
