Intermarque Spring Kick-off
Intermarque's Spring Kick-off was a blast! For those of you that didn't make it, you missed out on some amazing cars. If you can think of a European car that was manufactued in the 20th century, it was probably there. Ferraris, Fiats, Jaguars, Aston Martins, Triumphs, MGs, SAABs, Lotuses, Opels, Porsches, Bentleys, and on, and on, and on. Nearly 100 cars were there. Thanks to those who volunteered, and for those that missed it, you only have to wait another year. Below are pictures of Larry Williams famous stroker "Sadie" who is now safely in the hands of Jack Johnston in the Minneapolis area. For those of you that don't know, "Sadie" has attended every National SAAB Owners Convention. Also pictured, is our faithful Minnesota SAAB Club Pro Rally car among some British friends.
SAAB Club Window Stickers
We still have SAAB Club stickers available! The Minnesota SAAB Club window stickers are static-cling so that you will never have to worry about scraping off that hardened film from your window. The static stickers are similar to the logo here on the newsletter, and are about 3X5 inches in size. The major difference is that the fire-breathing-chicken is now in red. Stickers sell for $5 each, or 3 for $10. Additionally, if you are a current dues paying member of the Minnesota SAAB Club, you get a window sticker for FREE (Membership has its privileges)! Also, we are not descriminatory. If you belong to another local or national club, or are simply a lone enthusiast, you too can still get one. Heck, even if you drive a Yugo you can buy one and display to the world the lust that lies in your heart. Just contact me and place your order today!

SAAB Sets New Sales Record!
SAAB finished June 2005 with 6,593 total retail sales, of which 1,999 for 9-2X alone. This is clearly the best month ever in SAAB's entire 49-year history in the US. The Saab 9-3 sedan saw an increase of 25%, while the all-new 9-7X SUV had a promising start while still being restricted during the production ramp-up.
SAAB USA general manager Jay Spenchian: "Main factors that contributed to our success in June were the "Employee Pricing For Everyone" program and a combination of increased public awareness and more attractive pricing for the 9-2X. Also, the 9-3 showed a clear increase, which is an encouraging signal for the upcoming extension of the model line with the Aero V6 Turbo and the 5-door SportCombi this fall." SAAB USA is well under way to reach the 40,000 overall sales target for the year (38,159 in 2004).
9-7X SUV retail sales were 316 vehicles for its first month - keep in mind that this is still a restricted number as we are gearing up production.

GM Employee Discount for Everyone Returns
Offer Available Through Aug. 1 on 2005 Models
DETROIT – General Motors today announced the return of its ‘GM Employee Discount for Everyone’ marketing program. GM is continuing the offer of its employee discount to everyone who takes delivery of a new 2005 GM car or truck from July 6 through Aug. 1, 2005.
“The ‘GM Employee Discount for Everyone’ has been an effective way for us to continue to tell consumers about the great value represented in our cars and trucks,” said Pete Gerosa, GM North America vice president, Field Sales, Service and Parts. “With 20 models that achieve at least 30 miles-per-gallon fuel economy on the highway; eight ‘Most Dependable’ awards in the recently-announced 2005 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study; and the security of OnStar on 54 of our models, there are plenty of good reasons right now to purchase or lease a GM car or truck.”
The eight ‘Most Dependable’ awards in the J.D. Power and Associates 2005 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) are: Chevrolet Prizm (Compact Car), Chevrolet Malibu (Entry Midsize Car), Buick Century (Premium Midsize Car), Buick LeSabre (Full-size Car), Chevrolet S-10 Pickup (Midsize Pickup), Cadillac Escalade EXT (Light Duty Full-size Pickup), Chevrolet Silverado HD (Heavy Duty Full-size Pickup) and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL (Full-size SUV).
As with the June program, the July offer gives consumers an opportunity to pay the price a GM employee pays for a 2005 model year vehicle, including available rebates, but excluding taxes, title and dealer fees. Prices are prominently displayed on eligible vehicles at participating GM dealers and available on www.gmbuypower.com.
“We were really pleased by the consumer and dealer response to our ‘Employee Discount’ program in June,” Gerosa added. “Consumers told us that the simplicity and transparency
of the program along with the clearly compelling employee price is a great idea. Buyers
liked the fact that they could easily identify the employee discount price either at their local GM dealer or on our website, and our dealers, who enthusiastically support this program, told us that it drove a lot of new customers into their showrooms.”
The ‘GM Employee Discount for Everyone’ includes all 2005 GM cars and trucks, except for Chevrolet Corvette, Pontiac GTO and all medium duty trucks and is compatible with most other incentives currently available.
The program will be supported by some new broadcast, print and online advertising featuring GM employees.

GM Reports 558,092 Deliveries in June, Up 41 Percent
Best Sales Since September 1986
Truck Deliveries Up 68 Percent, Setting All-Time Industry Record
Full-Size Pickups and Sport Utilities Establish New Industry Sales Benchmarks
Best-Ever Sales for GMC, HUMMER and SAAB
Cadillac and Chevrolet Have Best Sales Since 1986DETROIT – General Motors dealers in the U.S. sold 558,092 new cars and trucks in June, up 41 percent compared to year-ago sales. This was GM’s best sales month since September 1986. The strong results were paced by all-time industry record truck sales (382,601) that were up 68 percent. GM led the industry in full-size pickup deliveries, which were up 102 percent. Car sales (175,491) were up 4 percent, with several new vehicles, including Cadillac STS, Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G6 and Buick LaCrosse, posting record sales results.
Calendar year-to-date sales are up 2.5 percent, with truck deliveries up 6 percent and car sales down 3 percent. Second-quarter sales increased 9 percent, with truck deliveries up 12 percent and car sales up 3 percent.
“We had great results across the board in June, and our truck business was exceptionally strong,” said Mark LaNeve, GM vice president, North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. “We see this as an indication that America’s desire for trucks and SUVs is still a strong force in the marketplace. It’s really pretty simple – offer great vehicles that people want, match that with outstanding value, and you’ll get great results.”
LaNeve went on to say that the ‘GM Employee Discount for Everyone’ exceeded expectations. “We were confident that our ‘Employee Discount’ program would hit a responsive cord, but we were a little surprised by just how strong the results were, including bringing over one hundred and fifty thousand new customers into the GM family in June. This definitely moves us in the right direction as we gear up to introduce our 2006 models,” he added.
Chevrolet had its best sales since 1986, driven by record truck sales that were up 66 percent. Silverado led the industry in full-size pickup sales, up 102 percent with its best-ever sales. Colorado (up 82 percent) and Equinox (up 138 percent) also claimed all-time record deliveries. Chevrolet’s newest cars, Cobalt and Aveo, both beat their previous best-ever sales results. Cobalt deliveries were up 7 percent compared to May and Aveo sales improved 94.5 percent versus year-ago levels.
Cadillac continued its strong sales performance, also posting its best sales since 1986, with sales up 64 percent. June’s results were paced by record CTS sales, up 49 percent. STS continues to build sales momentum with its best sales results since launch. On the truck side, each vehicle in the Escalade portfolio posted sales gains. Escalade sales were up 30 percent, ESV increased 42 percent and EXT rose 55 percent.
Buick-Pontiac-GMC combined deliveries were up 35 percent compared to last year, led by best-ever GMC deliveries, up 85 percent versus year-ago levels. A number of all-time GMC records were achieved, including best-ever monthly deliveries for Canyon (up 178 percent), Sierra (up 127 percent) and Yukon (up 96 percent). Buick posted strong sales results in June, with deliveries up 31 percent. LaCrosse sales rose 51 percent, its best sales since launch, setting month-over-month sales increases for six of seven months since its launch. Buick truck deliveries were up in June, paced by strong Rainier (up 34 percent) and Rendezvous (up 73 percent) sales. Pontiac G6 had its best-ever sales in June as the first coupes began arriving in dealerships.
The all-new HUMMER H3, which as a 2006 model was not included in the ‘GM Employee Discount for Everyone’ program, is off to a strong start with 3,841 units sold in June. HUMMER had its best sales month since the launch of the division mid-2002, with deliveries up 199 percent compared to year-ago levels. H2 deliveries established a new June record, with sales up 31 percent compared to year-ago levels.
Saturn also had a strong sales month (up 33 percent), led by record June deliveries for Vue, which were up 66 percent compared to year-ago levels. Relay also had its best sales-to-date, with deliveries that were 31 percent above May levels.
Saab had its best-ever sales results in its 49-year history in the U.S., with deliveries up 57 percent compared to last June. The 9-2X had its best sales-to-date, posting a 77 percent improvement over May sales. Production of the all-new 9-7X SUV continues to ramp up.
Certified Used Vehicles
June sales for all certified GM brands, including GM Certified Used Vehicles, Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Used Cars from Saturn and Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, were 43,530 units, down 2 percent from last year. Total calendar year-to-date certified GM sales are 259,357 units, comparable to last year’s results for the same period.
GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry’s top-selling manufacturer-certified used brand, posted sales of 35,855 units, down 4 percent from June 2004. Year-to-date sales for GM Certified Used Vehicles are 219,730 units, up 1 percent.
Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles posted sales of 3,401 units, up 19 percent. Cadillac Certified year-to-date sales are up 15 percent over the same period in 2004. Used Cars from Saturn sold 3,320 units, down 6 percent. Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 954 units, up 21 percent.
“GM’s luxury certified brands performed strongly in June, with Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned sales up 19 percent and Saab Certified Pre-Owned up 21 percent,” LaNeve said. “GM Certified Used Vehicles, the top-selling certified brand, continues to lead all manufacturers in the category, with year-to-date sales ahead of last year’s segment-record performance.”
GM North America in June produced 416,600 vehicles (143,600 cars and 273,000 trucks), compared to 482,000 vehicles (194,000 cars and 288,000 trucks) produced in June 2004. Production totals include joint venture production of 23,000 vehicles in June 2005 and 25,000 vehicles in June 2004.

General Motors Europe Announces it Will Create a New European Design Center
![]()
- New, state-of-the-art facility located in Rüsselsheim , Germany to open in January 2006
- Saab Brand Center in Sweden to become global epicenter for the Saab brand
Zurich , Switzerland – General Motors Europe is announcing today that it will open a new European Design Center in Rüsselsheim , Germany in January 2006 as part of its continued focus on further strengthening product development. This new, world-class facility will be housed in the center of its Rüsselsheim campus.
“Design is already one of the most crucial elements of our business and will continue to be in the future,” said Carl-Peter Forster, president of GM Europe. “Therefore, we will create a facility that provides our designers with the location, atmosphere and tools they need to maximize the creative process and design our future vehicles.”
The new design center will house GM Europe’s advanced and production design, providing a direct link and increased synergies between advanced engineering, product planning and the brands.
“Having our advanced design operations in Rüsselsheim will further strengthen our ties with engineering and planning,” said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director of GM Design Europe. “The new, high-tech facility, enabling the right creative incubator, demonstrates GM’s continued recognition of design’s value to the development of our GM Europe brands.”
General Motors’ global Design organization is a multi-national team with eleven design centers around the world. The offices are linked via virtual reality studios and projects are shared around the globe. The organization is led by Ed Welburn, GM’s global vice president of design.
“A new GM Europe design center is an exciting addition to our global design enterprise,” said Welburn. “Our company truly has a passion for design, and this new facility will help secure our design relevance in the European region, and around the world, for years to come.”
The new GM Europe Design Center will be located in a state-of-the-art building on the Rüsselsheim site that will be modified specifically for design’s needs.
SAAB Brand Center to open in Sweden
In concert with this announcement, GM Europe will also establish a global Saab Brand Center in Sweden . This will be the epicenter of the Saab brand and will house a strategic design team that will concentrate on Saab-specific design.
“From a designer’s perspective, Saab has such a rich history to build upon,” said Nesbitt. “Therefore, we plan to ensure that future Saabs maintain this DNA, accentuating their aircraft heritage and the Scandinavian design aesthetics that have helped Saab challenge the mainstream for nearly 60 years.”
In addition to Saab designers, the Saab Brand Center will house a core team of engineers and marketers who will work in close collaboration to develop, evolve and maintain the Saab brand character in all areas – from developing future product proposals to ensuring consistent communication across the globe.
“The sole focus of Saab’s new Brand Center is to create an environment where Saab specialists can focus specifically on what makes Saab unique and, therefore, help ensure we maintain these qualities in everything we do: design, engineering, marketing communications and more,” said Forster.
High Gas Prices Getting You Down?
With crude oil prices now over $60 a barrel, the price of gas is now higher than it has ever been. Well, there is a little tool out there that can assist you in significantly reducing the cost of your future fill-ups at the pump. It's called www.twincitiesgasprices.com. When you log on to the site, it will give you both the highest and lowest reported gas prices all over the Minneapolis/St.Paul region. What's that? You don't live within the twin cities? Fear not, as there are myriad other sister sites for greater Minnesota, and throughout most of the rest of the country. As this newsletter goes to press, a Phillips 66 station in South St. Paul is selling regular gas for $2.17 per gallon, whereas a Mobil station in Oakdale, just a couple of mile away, is selling regular gas for $1.77 a gallon. So, say your vehicle holds around 20 gallons of gas (as most of our SAABs do), that's a savings of $8.00 for a two mile drive. Interesting, isn't it? Fortunately, all of us that drive SAABs already, know that we get between about 25 and 40 miles per gallon!
Saab Automobile AB is
joining the ranks of automakers that provide extended warranties on engines
prone to oil sludge buildup and possible failure. In the
United States, letters announcing
the warranty will go this month to owners of 132,000 vehicles, says Tom Beaman,
spokesman for Saab Cars USA Inc. The number of Saab vehicles affected
worldwide is 430,000, he says. Saab is extending its engine warranty to
eight years. A mileage limitation hasn't been determined. The warranty was for
four years or 50,000 miles. Because the Saab warranty follows the car, it
will apply to used vehicles. But owners must have records showing they have
performed proper maintenance, Beaman says. Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi
have approved similar warranties for some vehicles.
Clarence
Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, says the Chrysler
group remains a holdout against extended warranties that cover sludge
buildup. Ditlow says his Washington, D.C., consumer group has
received hundreds of complaints about sludge in 2.7-liter V-6s in Chrysler group
vehicles. Most of the engines are in 1998-2002 Dodge and Chrysler cars, he
says. The Chrysler group believes sludge in any engine is a result of
infrequent oil changes, spokesman Sam Locricchio says. Sludge is
thickened, contaminated oil. When it forms, engine parts are less likely to be
lubricated properly. Saab calls its extended warranty a special policy.
The warranty covers these four-cylinder engines:
>>> The 2.3-liter
in 1998-2003 Saab 9-5s and in 1999 Saab 9-3 Viggens.
>>> The 2.0-liter in
2000-02 Saab 9-3 three-doors and five-doors and in 2000-03 Saab 9-3
convertibles.
Beaman says Saab believes only a few cars in these groups
will develop a sludge problem.
